"Happy International Workers' Day, May Day, May 1, 2023. In this remarkable and pure moment, we continue to strengthen our sense of togetherness between workers, entrepreneurs, and the government, under a harmonious industrial relation," he noted in a statement in Bandung, West Java, Monday.
According to the governor, harmonious relations between workers, entrepreneurs, and the government is essential to realize all parties' expectations to make "prosperous workers, advanced entrepreneurs, and a glorious Indonesia."
The May 1 momentum, widely known as May Day, is being celebrated by workers around the world, including in Indonesia in various regions.
Chairman of the West Java Labor Union Muhammad Sidarta stated that May Day will be celebrated in the midst of collective leave during the Eid al-Fitr holiday to echo the workers' aspirations and demands.
"I am convinced that all workers in Indonesia are calling on the exact same demand that the Job Creation Law be revoked," he noted.
He stressed that the ruling of the Constitutional Court had deemed that the formation of Law Number 11 of 2022 on Job Creation is inconsistent with the 1945 Constitution.
"Moreover, workers refused an up to 25-percent deduction in wages, as it would further suppress the existing low wages. We have witnessed no increases in wages in the past three years. However, when there is an increase, it could be cut by up to 25 percent. This is apprehensive," he remarked.
According to Sidarta, the deduction provision is regulated by Manpower Minister's Regulation Number 5 of 2023 on Adjustment of Work Hours and Wages in Certain Export-oriented Labor-intensive Companies.
