Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social media observer and personal data protection expert Ibnu Dwi Cahyo highlighted the importance of digital literacy through formal educational institutions.

Cahyo conveyed the message to coincide with the commemoration of National Education Day 2023 on May 2.

In his statement on Tuesday, Cahyo stated that improving digital literacy through formal educational institutions could no longer be postponed.

This has become increasingly important since digitalization has played an important role in all spheres of life, so formal educational institutions should be the main place for children to learn about the do's and don’ts in cyber space.

"Digital literacy is very important, especially when we are facing an era of very free social media," Executive Director of Siber Sehat Indonesia emphasized.

"Then, regarding the protection of personal data, we will face elections and presidential elections that are also important in 2024," he further noted.

"All are connected and influence each other. With good digital literacy, elections will take place safely, with the quality of the results increasing," he remarked.

"However, with low digital literacy, there will be many conflicts on all fronts, especially in terms of the spread of hoaxes," he cautioned.

Cahyo believes that the opportunity to improve digital literacy through formal educational institutions is very feasible, especially with the independent learning curriculum.

However, equipping teachers in schools with additional tools is also important to enable them to keep pace with digital developments.

He deems this to be important in order to foster a relationship between students as "digital natives" and teachers.

"Digital literacy not only helps improve quality elections and presidential elections but also increases the trust of the international community and investors in Indonesia," he stated.

"Good digital literacy will directly increase awareness of personal data protection not only among the public but also among stakeholders," he affirmed.

"In the end, the resulting regulations will really be in favor of protecting people's personal data without reducing the flexibility of business and administrative-bureaucratic activities," he added.

Moreover, he stressed that encouraging digital literacy in formal educational institutions would help Indonesia move in an evolutionary and even revolutionary direction along with the demographic bonus that the country would enjoy.

"Education is the main key in dealing with the current and future demographic bonus. Digital literacy can be one of the supporting factors, so that the demographic bonus is really beneficial for Indonesia," he affirmed.

"With good digital literacy, Indonesian people can be more productive and generate more foreign exchange for the country," he stated.
