This meeting itself aims to reach an agreement between all parties on transparency and information exchange to support the implementation of PSMA.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The 4th Meeting of the Parties to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) will be held in Badung district, Bali, from May 8–12, 2023.

The meeting is being organized by Indonesia’s Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Ministry and the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The meeting's participants, who will range from experts and delegations from PSMA member countries to representatives of international agencies, will draw attention to ports' roles in eradicating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF) practices.

"This PSMA event is part of our efforts for preventing IUUF practices by bringing attention to fishing ports management," KKP official Tri Aris Wibowo said in an official statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday.

PSMA constitute a number of provisions made by governments to address issues related to foreign fishing vessels that wish to enter and/or utilize port facilities of the states that are parties to the agreement.

The provisions were made in hopes of preventing, impeding, and eradicating IUUF.

"The existence of PSMA proves our concern regarding the importance of eradicating and preventing IUUF practices. It will also benefit us by increasing fisheries products' competitiveness as it affirms the clarity of fishery products' traceability," he pointed out.

In addition, he added, the PSMA meeting will reiterate Indonesia's firm stance against illegal fishing activities.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the 4th meeting of the PSMA Nilanto Perbowo informed that the meeting will discuss a series of agendas.

They will include discussions on the status of the 2009 FAO agreement on PSMA and the strategy for increasing PSMA's effectiveness through fishery data and information exchange between participating states in order to suppress IUUF practices.

“Hopefully, in the future, all parties to PSMA can use a more complete instrument as a guideline. This meeting itself aims to reach an agreement between all parties on transparency and information exchange to support the implementation of PSMA," Perbowo said.
