At a Merdeka Barat 9 Forum discussion on Friday, which was followed from Jakarta, Assistant for Operations to the police chief, Inspector General Agung Setya Imam Effendy, said that the operation is being carried out using a detailed security mechanism and integrated with all aspects, both security and supporting aspects of the summit.
"We want to ensure that this summit is held in a safe condition. Everything has been planned and the schedule and activities have been arranged. With more detailed preparations, we will be able to ensure that the summit will go according to plan," Effendy added.
For securing the 2023 ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, the National Police has deployed 2,627 personnel from the National Police Headquarters, the East Nusa Tenggara Regional Police, and the West Nusa Tenggara Regional Police, he informed.
The National Police is also collaborating with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and related stakeholders, including the central and provincial/district governments, he said.
"This Friday, security personnel have arrived and occupied the posts and plotting positions based on their designated posts," he disclosed.
In addition, he informed that the TNI has prepared ships that will dock in Labuan Bajo waters. Likewise, the presidential security guards (Paspampres) have started to organize routes and prepare locations for activities.
To ensure security readiness ahead of the ASEAN Summit, the National Police has conducted several security exercises to adapt to the situation in Labuan Bajo, he said.
"In order to be able to manage this specific area, it is necessary to identify the location by detailing what potentials that can be managed and controlled to realize a safe environment," he added.
The 2023 Komodo Operation will take place from May 5–12. Apart from Labuan Bajo, the National Police will also focus on securing two buffer areas—Bima and Sumba—as well as five counter-regions, namely Manggarai, East Manggarai, Ngadain, Nagekeo, and Ende districts, Effendy disclosed.
