Jakarta (ANTARA) - House Speaker Puan Maharani has reaffirmed the commitment of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) to increasing its capacity in response to regional and global challenges and supporting ASEAN as the epicenter of growth.

"AIPA has been tasked with promoting solidarity, understanding, cooperation, and relationship among ASEAN member states. It is serving as a platform for ASEAN parliaments to carry out our parliamentary diplomacy functions," Maharani said here on Monday

Maharani who leads the House's delegation has been scheduled to arrive at Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara Province, on Monday evening for the 42nd ASEAN Summit.

She said that AIPA is a forum to share perspectives and explore new ways to strengthen cooperation in various fields.

AIPA is committed to strengthening its position to support ASEAN as the epicenter of economic growth for the region's prosperity, she added.

In addition to cooperation, she said that she will raise the issue of protecting Indonesian migrant workers (PMIs) at the summit in order to find solutions for the high number of cases of violence involving PMI victims.

"We cannot fight alone to resolve cross-country problems. There must be a collaboration between countries to find effective solutions because migrant workers are often victims of human trafficking," she added.

Moreover, the House Speaker will touch upon various issues at the 42nd ASEAN Summit, including the preparation of the post-2025 vision, the Myanmar situation, and the post-pandemic economic recovery.

"(As well as) strengthening the health architecture in the region, outside the region, and the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) signing," she said.

She will also attend the parliamentary preparatory meeting with AIPA members, courtesy calls of ASEAN leaders, and hold a meeting with secretary general of AIPA, Siti Rozaimeriyanty Haji Abdul Rahman.

Indonesia has raised the theme of “ASEAN as the Epicentrum of Growth" for its chairmanship this year to highlight the region's relevancy and centrality.

The 42nd ASEAN Summit will be attended by heads of state, parliamentary leaders, and other high officials.
