Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will focus on strengthening multilateralism, inclusive recovery, and digital transformation as the chair of the MIKTA partnership forum, House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has said.

She made the statement at the “8th Meeting of the MIKTA Speaker’s Consultation Forum” after taking over the chairmanship of the forum from Turkish Parliament Speaker Mustafa Sentop in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara.

MIKTA was established in 2013 as a consultation and cooperation forum for five middle-power countries, namely Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia, which are also members of the G20.

At the MIKTA meeting, the DPR Speaker sought the support of parliamentary speakers of other member countries for her one-year chairmanship, which will end in March 2024.

"We believe that you will lead this forum as well as when Indonesia chaired the G20 Parliament (P20) last year (in 2022)," Sentop said in response to Maharani’s request.

At the meeting, the speakers of the parliaments of MIKTA members discussed the challenges and opportunities faced by the parliaments in the 21st century, including the issues of international migration, the new world order, and legislation on artificial intelligence.

Maharani also led a talk on better governance in relation to food security, supply chains, poverty alleviation, and climate change mitigation.

Parliamentary diplomacy must be a part of a more inclusive multilateralism that involves various actors, she said.

Hence, she invited the parliaments of all countries across the world to continue carrying out multilateral dialogue to improve the global multilateralism system to face the challenges of the 21st century.

The chairmanship handover was witnessed by the speakers and deputy speakers of the parliaments of MIKTA members.

Indonesian Ambassador to Turkey Lalu Muhamad Iqbal; secretary general of DPR Indra Kusuma; as well as two DPR members Charles Honoris and Sudin also attended the event.

MIKTA aims to bridge the interests of developed and developing countries.

Apart from being the chair of the MIKTA Speaker’s Consultation Forum, Maharani is also serving as the chair of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2023.
