Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Communication and Informatics Ministry has informed that it is preparing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Vietnam to establish cooperation in the digital sector.

"Indonesia and Vietnam so far do not have a cooperation (in the digital sector), so we have agreed to create one in the form of an MoU related to the development of digital infrastructure and digital space," Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate said here on Wednesday.

The MoU is expected to become a legal foundation and strengthen cooperation between the two countries in digital infrastructure and digital space utilization, he added.

The MoU plan was revealed after he held a bilateral meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Manh Hung, at Hotel Jayakarta, Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara.

In addition to digital infrastructure development, Indonesia and Vietnam will also draft an MoU on the utilization of digital space for supporting the digital economy.

The MoU will also include the strengthening of cybersecurity and the prevention of hoaxes and disinformation.

"It is important for us to do this together so that the digital space can benefit our society. Combating fake news and disinformation is certainly in line with laws and regulations or what are called lawful interceptions and lawful taking down. That is what we discussed," Plate said.

During the meeting, the two ministers discussed and shared experiences on digital infrastructure development.

They also shared their views and discussed the urgency of building a healthy digital space to benefit the people of both countries.

The sharing of experiences in the same sector is expected to strengthen cooperation in other related sectors.

"Because this is a large region where there is growth, we must take advantage of digitalization for the interest of community development," he said.

Meanwhile, Minister Hung expressed his gratitude for the meeting with Indonesian representatives.

According to him, Vietnam will follow up on the MoU agreement, which is planned to be discussed in September 2023.
