Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has assured that the tsunami early warning system in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, which is hosting the 42nd ASEAN Summit, is running properly.

"We have inspected and tested all the equipment owned by BMKG prior to the implementation of the ASEAN Summit to check the reliability of the devices," BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati said in a press release received on Wednesday.

She informed that the equipment included tsunami early warning alarms, evacuation route directions, as well as signs for assembly points at all venues of the summit, which is being implemented from May 9 to 11, 2023.

"We have also reviewed the earthquake and tsunami evacuation routes as well as identified tsunami safe zones in all of the venues," she added.

The BMKG head informed that the tsunami early warning alarm was located in Puncak Waringin, Labuan Bajo.

In addition, her agency also reviewed evacuation routes at Labuan Bajo Marina Beach, which is one of the tourist destinations in the region where many tourist cruise ships and yachts dock.

"Apart from increasing disaster preparedness during the ASEAN Summit, the attempt also aims to educate the public about self-evacuation if an earthquake, a tsunami, or other natural disasters occur," Karnawati explained.

She said she expected that with thorough preparation, the ASEAN Summit will run safely, comfortably, smoothly, and successfully to generate various policies that benefit all member countries of the regional grouping.

For its 2023 ASEAN chairmanship from January 1 to December 31, Indonesia has raised the theme of “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth” to reflect Southeast Asia’s position as a relevant and important center of global growth.

Four venues are hosting the series of activities of the 42nd ASEAN Summit, namely Bintang Flores Hotel, Puncak Waringin, Ayana Hotel, and Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo Hotel.

President Joko Widodo officially opened the summit at Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo Hotel on Wednesday morning.
