Through his Twitter account, the president celebrated the national team's victory in clinching another gold medal for Indonesia.
"A dramatic match for 120 minutes, with many red and yellow cards and beautiful goals even until injury time," Jokowi stated in his tweet on late Tuesday.
He also mentioned that the gold medal is Indonesia's first from the SEA Games' men's football in 32 years.
"Finally, the Young Garuda team has brought home the gold medal in football at the 2023 SEA Games, ending our 32-year wait. Congratulations, Young Garuda!" the president concluded his tweet.
During Tuesday's final match, Indonesia defeated Thailand 5-2 after two 15-minute extra times, as the 2-2 tie had not been broken by the end of the regular 90-minute match.
Ramadhan Sananta scored two goals, giving Indonesia a 2-0 at half-time.
However, Anan Yodsangwal and Yosakon Burapha from the Thai team equalized the score to 2-2, which remained unchanged until the 90th minute.
Irfan Jauhary restored Indonesia's lead at the start of extra time, and then Fajar Fathur Rahman and Beckham Putra scored goals in succession, sealing the gold medal for Indonesia with a 5-2 victory.
The victory on Tuesday marked Indonesia's third win in men's football at the SEA Games. Indonesia previously won in men's football at the 1987 SEA Games in Jakarta and the 1991 SEA Games in Manila.
The men's football medal was Indonesia's 87th gold medal in this edition of the SEA Games, surpassing the 69-gold medal target set by President Jokowi after surpassing the 60-medal mark set by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
