This collaboration between the central and regional governments can serve as a good example for other regions to realize safe, secure, and comfortable land transportation services.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Transportation Ministry held the groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the establishment of the multi-function Purworejo Baru Type A Bus Station in Purworejo District, Central Java Province, on Sunday.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo attended the event. This new bus station is located some 500 meters from the existing station that has been operated since 1994.

The minister said that construction of the station is being conducted in accordance with President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi’s) directives in order to continue to increase the use of mass transportation.

"Hence, construction of the bus station should also increase the function of the station, as a center for community activities, and it is expected that the station can be used sustainably," he noted.

The public infrastructure will have three main functions: serving bus passengers, encouraging growth of the local economy, as well as becoming a social, artistic, and cultural activity center.

Thus, the station will be equipped with several facilities, including a commercial area for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), public service office, multi-function hall, and so on.

"The location for the construction of the Purworejo Baru Bus Station is strategic using an area that has been granted (by the local governments). The establishment of this new station is expected to improve road transportation services," Sumadi noted.

He expressed gratitude to the Central Java Provincial Government and Purworejo District Government for granting 1.18 hectares of land for development of the bus station.

"This collaboration between the central and regional governments can serve as a good example for other regions to realize safe, secure, and comfortable land transportation services," he remarked.

Furthermore, the minister said that his side also provides opportunities for various parties, including state-owned enterprises, regional-owned enterprises, or private companies, to cooperate in developing the Purworejo Baru Station through the Public-Private Partnership (KPBU) scheme.

"We also encourage all MSMEs in Purworejo and its surrounding areas to optimally use the commercial areas provided in the bus station area," he noted.

Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo welcomed the construction of the new bus station.

"Hopefully, the development of this bus station, which has more complete facilities, can improve the economy of the people in Purworejo and its surrounding areas," he added.

Establishment of the new bus station is carried out by the ministry’s Land Transportation Management Office (BPTD) for Regional X of Central Java Province.

The new public facility is expected to be able to serve 1,000-1,200 passengers as well as 128 interprovincial buses each day.

The project is funded by the non-tax state revenue (PNBP) and state sharia securities (SBSN), with a total budget ceiling of Rp35 billion (US$2.3 million).

The Transportation Ministry targets the project to be completed at the end of 2023.
