Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has expressed its support for the establishment of a game assets store for developing the national gaming industry.

"In (the store), there will be assets in the form of two- or three-dimensional characters, environments, objects, and audio that have the characteristics of Indonesian culture," the head of BRIN's Data and Information Science Research Center, Esa Prakasa, said here on Friday.

The store could become an asset provider for local game developers, he added.

Indonesia already has a team for accelerating local game development, which is chaired by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.

BRIN is collaborating with the Indonesian Game Association (AGI) for building an assets store to support the development of local games.

It is also working with an arts and design faculty for providing two- and three-dimensional game assets with themes based on Indonesian culture.

The assets will be stored on a web-based application so that they can be utilized by Indonesian game makers later.

"Indonesian culture-themed games will help introduce and disseminate cultural aspects to various circles," Prakasa said.

According to him, apart from helping preserve culture, this could also attract tourists seeking to explore the origin of the culture introduced in the game.

Last year, at the Pokemon Festival Jakarta 2022, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno expressed the hope that more local games would gain in popularity.

He noted that a number of local games were contested at the Esports Presidential Cup tournament, for instance, Lokapala, Battle of Guardians, and Satria Dewa.

Uno also called for the development of digital talent to push the growth of the local gaming industry.

According to him, this is needed so that local gaming industry players can end the domination of game developers from abroad and lead the domestic market.
