Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry confirmed on Tuesday that the Climate Village Program (ProKlim) had been implemented in at least 6,000 locations nationwide by the end of 2022.

After opening a technical meeting on addressing climate change issues in the Sulawesi region, the director general of climate change control at the ministry, Laksmi Dhewanthi, stated that the government aims to establish 20,000 "climate villages" by 2024.

"With the current realization, we target that at least 7,000 climate villages will be established this year alone, while the rest will be completed next year," she added.

The official mentioned that her ministry is targeting to set up 13,000 climate villages by the end of 2023.

"At present, we are conducting verification, and the Sulawesi region will be included in the climate village development projects," informed Dhewanthi.

The Climate Village Program is implemented to encourage public involvement in adaptation and mitigation actions against climate change and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the Environment and Forestry Ministerial Regulation No. 84 of 2016 on the Climate Village Program, ProKlim can be implemented in administrative areas at the level of rukun warga (community units) up to villages.

The director general stated that the government is considering re-conceptualizing the program as a community-based activity that could be implemented in school and office environments.

The Climate Village Program, as a climate action measure at the basic level, is one of the issues being discussed at the technical meeting, which is taking place on May 30–31, 2023.

Ministry representatives and officials from regional governments are attending the meeting to discuss and develop collaboration between authorities at all government levels to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
