Phnom Penh, Cambodia (ANTARA) - Indonesian para-athletic and para-swimming athletes once again managed to bag gold medals at a number of events at the 2023 ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia on Tuesday.

As of 12 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the athletes had managed to claim an additional 9 gold, 14 silver, and 12 bronze medals.

"We are, of course, grateful and happy with the medal achievement until this noon, receiving 9 gold medals," Deputy Secretary General of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Rima Ferdianto said.

"We expect more than 20 gold medals for today," he added.

Swimmer Maulana Rifki Yavinda snagged a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke S12 event at Morodok Techo Aquatic Center.

Yavinda logged the fastest time of 1 minute and 6.53 seconds, setting a new record at the ASEAN Para Games. Menaser Meriba Numberi claimed the bronze medal at the event.

Yavinda also won gold in the 100-meter freestyle S12 event with a time record of 59.41 seconds, finishing ahead of Thai swimmer Anan Withetsuksom who clocked 1 minute 3.38 seconds.

Meanwhile, the bronze medal for the event was bagged by Indonesia’s Numberi with a time record of 1 minute 6.48 seconds.

Then, Indonesia's ace para-swimming athlete Jendi Pangabean won two gold medals in the 100-meter butterfly S9 and 100-meter backstroke S9 events.

In the women's 100-meter freestyle S14 event, Syuci Indriani settled for a silver medal after finishing behind Thailand’s Nattharine Khajhonmatha.

Meanwhile, her partner Meliani Ratih Pratama took the bronze medal. Marianus Melianus Yowei also won a bronze in the 100-meter freestyle S13 event.

In the para-athletic sports branch, Yahya Juhdiansyah bagged a gold medal in the F44 discus event.

Gold medals were also contributed by Petrus Kanel Alupan, Eko Saputra, Muamar Habibila, and Ruli Alkahfi Mubaroq in the men's 4 x 100-meter relay T11-13 event.

"There were several missed targets, such as Nanda Mei Sholihah (200-meter running T47) due to psychological issues and we understand that," Ferdianto said.

"Other athletes are expected to be able to cover this with performance that exceeds the target," he added.
