Jakarta (ANTARA) - Abortion must be conducted by competent and authorized personnel, according to Ari Kusuma Januarto, Head of Advocacy and Legislation of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI).

"Competence is very important because abortions must be performed, from the beginning to the end of the procedure, based on indications," he noted on Friday.

Januarto made the statement in response to the findings of a house in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, which was used for non-medical abortion practices.

The Central Jakarta Police cracked down on the house on Wednesday (June 28).

The practice of abortions by non-medical individuals had been ongoing for about a month, according to the police.

As the abortion procedure is a risky one, Januarto emphasized that patient safety should be prioritized in any medical action.

The Law No. 75 of 2014 allows abortions in medical emergencies and pregnancies due to rape, he said.

"Everything related to the medical risks of pregnant women, such as bleeding, anesthesia, underlying diseases, and other medical problems, is very important," he emphasized.

Januarto noted that another risk of abortion is the patient's psychiatric problems, which also requires assistance.

He said that abortion must be conducted in a government-appointed facility.

Around 11 percent of pregnancies are unwanted, either due to fetal problems, health issues, or social issues, he pointed out.

Januarto drew attention to regulations about abortions, including Law No. 36 of 2009, Government Regulation No. 61 of 2014 on reproductive health, and the criminal code.

He called for the socialization of these regulations to help people understand the difference between medical abortion and illegal abortion.

He noted that Government Regulation No. 61 of 2014 concerning reproductive health stipulates who has the authority and right to perform abortions, as well as the facilities designated by the government.

"Government and professional organizations are ready to help carry out abortions," Januarto stated.
