Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry has said that the 8th meeting of the Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Program's steering committee will expand the global connectivity of Indonesian students.

The 8th AIMS steering committee meeting has been organized by the ministry in Yogyakarta from July 3–5, 2023.

"This meeting is aimed at bringing neighboring countries closer without barriers through innovative mobility programs for students," the ministry's acting Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology Nizam said here on Tuesday.

The meeting will also strengthen communication among AIMS member countries in order to build a second home image for students.

The meeting is being attended by representatives from AIMS member countries, including Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea, with Cambodia serving as an observer.

In addition, the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center specializing in higher education and development (SEAMEO RIHED) chaired the meeting and facilitated discussions.

Center Director of SEAMEO RIHED Rimyen Kosaikanont welcomed the 8th steering committee meeting as the first offline meeting after three years of online coordination due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Let's make this 8th steering committee meeting a new spirit in welcoming collaboration on supporting people-to-people contact in the future," Kosaikanont said.

Fourteen Indonesian universities are members of AIMS, including Ahmad Dahlan University, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), and Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS).

They further include the Indonesian Institute of the Arts-Denpasar, the Indonesian Institute of the Arts-Surakarta, Padjadjaran University, Sebelas Maret University (UNS), Sriwijaya University, University of Indonesia (UI), Indonesian University of Education (UPI), Bina Nusantara University, and Maranatha University.

The meeting also reviewed the results of the 7th AIMS steering committee meeting and the 16th AIMS Annual Review Meeting in Seoul. Further, it discussed the issuance of AIMS certificates by member countries.
