Jakarta (ANTARA) - The large potential of new and renewable energy should be optimized to support national energy security and achieve the new and renewable energy mix target, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif stated.

All of Indonesia's new and renewable energy sources can be utilized if the country can develop supporting infrastructure that can distribute all sources' potential to be utilized, Tasrif remarked during the opening of the Indonesia EBTKE Conference and Exhibition (ConEx) 2023 streamed on Wednesday.

The new and renewable energy potential came from solar, wind, hydro, bioenergy, geothermal, and also sea energy, with total potential of up to 3,689 gigawatts (GW).

Indonesia aims to achieve the energy mix target in 2030 and zero emission by 2060. This has been programmed, well-formulated, and planned, and it requires additional efforts, he remarked.

The government already has the map that tells where these energy sources are located, he noted.

This new and renewable energy potential is scattered across Indonesia. For instance, the biggest hydro potential lies in North Kalimantan, Aceh, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Papua.

Meanwhile, the biggest geothermal potential is in the Ring of Fire region that encompasses Sumatra, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Maluku.

The biggest solar potential is in East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, and Riau that have higher radiation.

Moreover, the government has several policies for encouraging the use of new and renewable energy, including the New Energy Renewable Energy Bill (RUU EBET) that will be the main foundation for Indonesia to conduct faster energy transition.

The process to finalize the Problem Inventory List (DIM) discussion for the bill is being undertaken. The bill will facilitate business in the field of new and renewable energy and allow the utilization of existing resources, Tasrif remarked.
