Karim noted that his team is still investigating and identifying the case, including how the passport holders' data was leaked and which negligent parties that caused the data breach carried out by the hackers.
"We have identified it. We are working to find the party that leaked the data and the process of leaking the data," he confirmed while attending the 2023 Immigration Festival (IMIFest) in Denpasar, Bali, on Tuesday.
Moreover, Karim explained that no immigration data had been leaked, including the results of biometric records of passport holders and supporting data for passport applications.
"The leaked data did not come from Immigration's data. I will follow up on this matter. We will increase our vigilance," he affirmed.
Allegedly leaked passport data went viral on the social media platform Twitter in the first week of July 2023, after a tweet claimed that data on 34 million passport holders was leaked and traded.
The data believed to have been leaked included the passport number, passport expiry date, passport holder's full name, gender, and date of birth.
However, in its official broadcast, Immigration stated that the allegedly leaked data was text data no longer used by the Directorate General of Immigration.
The Directorate General of Immigration clarified that passport data is currently stored in the National Data Center (PDN) of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics.
Immigration has coordinated with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics and the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) to improve the security of the Immigration database.
"People do not need to worry if they plan to apply for an Indonesian passport and upload their personal data for this purpose," Karim noted in an official statement issued by the Directorate General of Immigration on July 9, 2023.
According to Karim, Immigration is currently implementing the ISO 27001-2022 security management system standard.
ISO 27001-2022 is an information security management system standard that provides a list of compliance requirements that organizations and professionals can certify.
The ISO standard helps institutions and organizations build, implement, maintain, and improve an information security management system (ISMS).
