Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has called for a review of the management of Indonesian migrant worker placements so that workers can get better protection, Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah has said.

"The President has asked Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (Airlangga Hartarto) for a two-week opportunity to review the placement management," Fauziyah informed after a meeting at the Presidential Palace complex here on Wednesday.

She added that the President has also asked Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, to handle the law enforcement.

According to Fauziyah, the placement management review will cover all stages starting from the departure of migrant workers from Indonesia, their placement in the destination country, and the return of migrant workers to Indonesia.

Indonesia already has a strict basis for migrant worker placement management, as regulated in Law Number 18 of 2017 on the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, she said.

She added that the review will focus on the implementation of the law.

The central government will also pay close attention to the role of regional governments at the provincial, district, and city levels, including village apparatuses, in the management of migrant worker placements.

She expressed the hope that all elements of regional governments will carry out their responsibilities in accordance with Law Number 18 of 2017.

The minister affirmed that she will soon hold a coordination meeting with Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian to discuss follow-up actions for President Widodo's instruction regarding the management of Indonesian migrant worker placements.
