Jakarta (ANTARA) - More than 98 million Indonesians get free access to health services through state health insurer BPJS Kesehatan whose costs are subsidized by tax revenue, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said here on Sunday.

"More than 98 million Indonesians have free access to health care by using BPJS Kesehatan. The state pays (the BPJS Kesehatan costs) through the tax revenue," Indrawati said at the "2023 Spectaxcular Taxation Sympathetic Campaign" event.

At the event held in Sarinah Shopping Center, Indrawati emphasized that tax revenue collected from the public is not only used to build infrastructure but also used for social subsidies and assistance.

In addition to subsidizing health costs for people who cannot afford it, tax benefits can also be seen in people's daily needs, such as the cheap 3-kilogram gas canisters, electricity, and fuel oil, the Finance Minister explained.

"The (subsidized) 3-kilogram gas canisters are from tax revenue, and most of the electricity in households is subsidized by the government," she said.

Indrawati stated that the Finance Ministry will improve convenience in reporting and paying taxes and provide education on the importance of taxation and its benefits.

"Tax has so many benefits, but the community must be more critical to all of us (officials involved in tax management), so we will be more transparent and continue to improve; We will continue to provide education," she said.

The minister also promised to be assertive in disciplining the officials under her leadership and the ministry's staff who make mistakes in managing taxes. Although humans are not free from mistakes, she said, she will not condone them.

"This is the promise of the Finance Ministry, (especially the) Directorate General of Taxes. It is our effort to build this beloved Indonesia, our own country," she said.

Minister Indrawati stressed that the nation can advance only from its efforts.

"So we will continue to move forward, work together and never forget to thank all Indonesians who have paid taxes well," she said.
