Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) plans to build a retention basin near the construction site for the Naratetama VVIP Airport in the new capital city of Nusantara (IKN).

Jarot Widyoko, the ministry's Director General of Water Resources, said in Jakarta on Monday that his side will also build another retention basin in Pemaluan Village, North Penajam Paser District, East Kalimantan.

He said that PUPR is aiming to complete the construction of 21 retention basins in IKN, including the additional two, by next year.

The retention basins or ponds are being built to provide IKN with adequate spots for storing rainwater and its runoff.

The ponds will store rainwater during the rainy season, which the people could use later during the dry season or in the event of a water shortage.

In addition to storing water, a retention pond can also serve as a habitat for various species of plants and animals.

It can also play a role in maintaining natural systems and processes, as it is, to a certain degree, capable of producing oxygen by providing a suitable habitat for phytoplanktons.

Earlier, PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that the government has prepared schemes optimally for ensuring the sustainability of raw water supply in the new capital city, which include the construction of reservoirs, dams, retention basins, and waste filtration installations.

The government is currently making tremendous efforts to develop IKN in parts of North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara districts, East Kalimantan, with the goal of making Indonesia a developed country.

By developing IKN, the government is seeking to realize equitable development in all regions of Indonesia as well as expedite the economic transformation in the country.
