Gunungkidul (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto officially opened a facility for clean water supply, including drilled wells and pipelines, in 11 areas in Gunungkidul District, the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

Subianto expressed optimism that the facility built with the ministry’s fund would help the people of Gunungkidul Regency to have easy access to clean water during the dry season.

“We urged the people to maintain and put the facility to good use. If there is a malfunction, please report it,” Prabowo noted while meeting with the local resident of Gunungkidul on Wednesday.

The minister stated that the clean water supply facility assistance in Gunungkidul is a follow-up of the community service activities conducted by the Defense University.

Based on a visit and report from a resident of Gunungkidul, Prabowo remarked that the ministry and the university are endeavoring to provide clean water supply by looking for water sources and building nine drilled wells as well as two retention basins.

"To build drilled wells and pipelines, a budget of Rp700 million to Rp1 billion per location was needed, depending on the geographical conditions of the region," he stated.

He also noted that it took three months to build a drilled well, right from searching for water sources to drilling and building pipelines.

Meanwhile, Head of Gunungkidul District Sunaryanta stated that the well and pipelines in 11 areas have helped fulfill the need for clean water for six thousand residents in that region.

Suryananta stated that the administration of Gunungkidul District has made efforts to address the issue of a lack of clean water, though still short of reaching all communities.

“Clean water demand is high, starting from the people’s need, the agriculture sector, and also livestock, specifically for the livestock breeders that can reach five million liters,” he remarked.

He expressed gratitude to the minister, the ministry, and the university for providing them with clean water by building drilled wells and pipelines at Gunungkidul.
