This joint declaration focuses on energy interconnectivity that is Indonesia's economic priority in the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship
Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA) - ASEAN energy ministers, at the 41st ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Nusa Dua, Bali, concurred on strengthening energy interconnectivity in the region to support sustainable energy security.

"This joint declaration focuses on energy interconnectivity that is Indonesia's economic priority in the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship," Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif stated at the closing of the 41st AMEM here on Friday.

According to Tasrif, the declaration focuses on pursuing regional targets of ASEAN for energy security through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), the Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline (TAGP), and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities by 2045.

At the meeting, Indonesia, Laos, and Brunei Darussalam signed an additional instrument in the joint agreement related to the ASEAN Power Grid.

Other ASEAN countries will sign the additional instrument by the end of this year.

The 41st AMEM also marked several important achievements, including the agreement on the power plant interconnection project between Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, as a further multilateral action after a similar step taken by Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

In addition, the declaration concerns support for strategies to achieve carbon neutrality, circular economy framework, taxonomy on sustainable financing, and blue economy framework in the ASEAN.

Furthermore, it includes the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II, which is from 2021-2025, and encompasses APG, TAGP, clean coal technology, energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy, and nuclear energy.

The energy interconnection is expected to bolster energy transition in the region.

Earlier, Secretary General of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Dadan Kusdiana stated that the ASEAN has the potential of generating 17 thousand gigawatts of new and renewable energy.

On that occasion, Minister Tasrif also announced that Laos will take on the ASEAN Chair, succeeding Indonesia in 2024.
