Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, is exploring deeper cooperation with the Dutch government on combating increasingly threatening transnational crimes.

"The governments must utilize technology to fight transnational crimes effectively. Hence, Indonesia and the Netherlands encourage cooperation in digital technology and social media platforms," Laoly said here on Friday.

According to him, transnational crimes increase as technology advances. Therefore, the government must build bilateral cooperation in the field of digital technology to effectively counter such crimes.

Minister Laoly held a meeting with Dutch Minister of Justice and Security, Dilan Yeilgöz-Zegerius, on Friday local time. The meeting was also joined by the Indonesian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Mayerfas, and the ministry's secretary general, Andap Budhi Revianto,

At the meeting, Laoly said that he wants Indonesia and the Netherlands to increase cooperation on law enforcement authorities and border surveillance.

Various forms of transnational crimes have harmed society, such as human trafficking and cyber fraud, he pointed out.

"Transnational crime perpetrators can post fake job vacancies abroad, and the victims are forced to stay and cannot go home. The governments of Indonesia and the Netherlands need to increase cooperation to fight these crimes," he said.

Indonesia has created a database to monitor the mobility of transnational crime survivors who have been repatriated and tighten immigration checks.

Moreover, it has carried out mutual legal assistance treaties, extradition, and legal cooperation with a number of countries to tackle transnational crimes.

The cooperation with the Netherlands, Laoly said, will strengthen the level of security and the government's ability to protect its people from transnational crimes.

Indonesia and the Netherlands regularly hold dialogues through the Indonesia - Netherlands Legal Update (INLU) forum to exchange views, experiences, and best practices in the field of law.
