Semarang (ANTARA) - The 2023 National Women's Congress has recommended issuing policies that support gender equality and the elimination of violence against women.

The recommendation was among several conveyed by Suryani Estati Sudibyo from Jakarta's Bhinneka Tunggal Ika National Alliance here on Saturday based on the results of this year's National Women's Congress.

Gender equality and a violence-free environment are important conditions for women's leadership development, she said.

Therefore, the congress asked the government to open more spaces for women's active participation in every policy formulation, she added.

"We ask the government to encourage the issuance of policies and implementing regulations that protect and accommodate women's basic rights based on women's experiences and needs," she said.

According to her, the government must also accommodate women's rights in a systematic and multi-sectoral manner by widening opportunities for strategic positions for women.

She said that taking part in every policy formulation actively and substantively is a part of the women's movement for ensuring the fulfillment of women's rights.

In addition, advocacy strategies and mechanisms must be integrated into the system, she added.

The women's movement also supervises the implementation of development to make sure that development efforts increase women's capacity, she highlighted.

The recommendations of the National Women's Congress were submitted to chair of the Congress, Nawal Arafah Yasin, and will be forwarded to the Central Java Governor.

The National Women's Congress was attended by one thousand participants from regions across Indonesia. The participants were community and religious leaders and members of women's organizations.

The holding of this year's Women's Congress was aimed at reminding the nation about the importance of women's movements and struggles.

Several issues were discussed at the congress, including opportunities and challenges of women's leadership in governance, in promoting and strengthening food security, and in realizing gender equality.
