Jakarta (ANTARA) - National Police Traffic Corps Head Inspector General Firman Shantyabudi clarified that vehicle emission testing is conducted to invite the public to maintain the environment by controlling vehicle exhaust and not for ticketing the community.

"We do not want the public to view that the police's approach is only law enforcement. Let us realize clean, safe, and orderly traffic, as (vehicle) emissions have become the world's and our health concern," he remarked here on Friday.

Through the emission test, Shantyabudi expects vehicle owners and the authority conducting the test to understand and apply the provisions on vehicles' exhaust production.

The emissions tests take place at the city, district, and provincial levels, he noted.

"If everyone does the same, and private vehicle owners diligently test their vehicles at workshops, then clean, safe, and orderly traffic can be realized," Shantyabudi remarked.

He emphasized that owners whose vehicles did not pass the emission test were not given tickets or any sanctions, but rather, advice to take their vehicles to the workshop.

"The important thing is how their vehicles can be clean (not passing the motorized vehicle emission threshold). That is our focus," he emphasized.

Moreover, he called on the media to participate in educating the public on emission tests, so people are eager to take their vehicles to get tested.

Meanwhile, his side has begun giving tickets to owners, who have not tested their vehicles in several severely polluted points in Jakarta.

The application of ticketing for owners of motorized vehicles that exceeded the emission limit has been carried out at five locations in Jakarta: on Pemuda Street in East Jakarta; RE Martadinata Street in North Jakarta, Taman Anggrek in West Jakarta, Blok M Terminal in South Jakarta, and the Industri Road in Central Jakarta.
