Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy reviewed the implementation of government development programs in Puncak District, Central Papua.

Effendy noted in a press release received here on Friday that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had sent him to ensure the proper implementation of development programs in Puncak District, especially in Sinak and its surroundings.

The minister remarked that the government has run several development programs in the district after drought and food shortages hit parts of the district.

The development program includes the runway extension of the Sinak Airport, the construction of a logistics warehouse, and the construction of Sinak-Ilaga, Sinak-Agandugume, and Sinak-Mulia roads.

According to Effendy, the government is extending Sinak Airport's runway to enable it to accommodate large-bodied aircraft that carry freight of building materials and other logistics.

"If wide-bodied aircraft can land there, it will smoothen air freight transportation to Sinak District and the surrounding areas, such as Agandugume, Lambewi, Oneri, Mulia, and Ilaga," he remarked.

He explained that the government is building roads that connect districts and a food warehouse to anticipate possible food shortages in winter.

"(The roads) will not only solve the problem of food scarcity but also expand land access," he affirmed.

Moreover, the minister urged the community, community leaders, and religious leaders to support the government development programs in Puncak by helping to maintain security around the development areas.

"I ask religious leaders, pastors, customary leaders, and tribal chiefs to support the government plan. By maintaining peace, harmony, and solidarity, we continue to advance Sinak and its surroundings," he affirmed.

During his visit to Puncak, the minister visited the temporary food storage facility that stores the assistance given to the community.

He also conducted the groundbreaking for the construction of a food warehouse, checked the airport runway, and handed over school supplies to children.
