Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's demographic bonus in 2030 opens up investment opportunities in the health sector of up to US$84 billion, or the equivalent of more than Rp1,200 trillion, an official from the Indonesian Health Ministry stated.

"The opportunity for investment in health in Indonesia is very big, amounting to US$84 billion," the ministry's director general of disease prevention and control, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, noted in Jakarta on Friday.

According to the official, Indonesia has a great opportunity to become a destination for health investment, as the country will face a demographic bonus in 2030.

During that period, Rondonuwu noted that the number of productive people is projected to drive an increase in Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP), including public awareness to invest in health.

"Our GDP is currently still in the range of US$4,500 per capita. During the demographic bonus period, this figure is expected to spike to a maximum level of US$12,500 per capita to increase health spending per capita, from the current average age of 72 years to 76 years, equivalent to Malaysia," he explained.

Rondonuwu remarked that currently, industrial revolution in the health sector has changed the world. Several developments in health innovation have been recorded in history, from the discovery of the smallest atomic components, binary digits or bits, to DNA, which has ultimately changed the world as it is today.

"For investing in health, people can buy low and sell high. Whoever invests early will earn the most," he emphasized.

Earlier, Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated at the 43rd ASEAN Summit Investment Forum in Jakarta last week that Indonesia was an attractive investment destination, based on the opportunities for continued population growth and major promising opportunities in the health sector.

"This growth is related to increased health spending to create a conducive environment for investors," the minister remarked.
