Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Alms Agency (Baznas) will soon deploy a humanitarian team to help victims of the earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday (September 8) evening local time.

"Baznas has been coordinating with the Indonesian Embassy in Rabat to deploy a humanitarian team and (distribute) aid," Head of Baznas Noor Achmad stated in Jakarta on Monday.

According to Achmad, the national agency will send various types of basic necessities to help assuage the suffering of earthquake survivors.

Furthermore, Baznas plans to raise humanitarian fund and then distribute it to Morocco akin to the steps it had taken for the victims of the earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria earlier in February this year.

"In this time of distress, the earthquake victims in Morocco are surely in need of enormous support and assistance. Bearing that in mind, Baznas will soon make utmost preparations for raising and distributing (the fund)," Achmad noted.

To partake in helping the victims, Achmad invited the people of Indonesia to work hand in hand to share their assets by participating in Baznas' planned fund-raising activities.

"We would like to invite all people in Indonesia to collectively provide assistance for our brothers and sisters, who are suffering from the disaster in Morocco," he stated.

Earlier, on September 9, President Joko Widodo expressed his deep condolences to the Moroccan people following the strongest earthquake to hit the North African country in the last century.

"I offer my deepest condolences to the people of Morocco following the tragic earthquake. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this incident," he noted in a post on his social media account.

The devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Morocco on Friday (September 8) at 11:11 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located 75 kilometers southeast of Marrakech, at a depth of 18.5 kilometers, according to the United States' Geological Survey (USGS).

Based on the World Health Organization's estimation, the disaster affected more than 300 thousand people in Marrakech. According to reports, the earthquake had claimed over two thousand lives.
