Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs emphasized that the government is currently accelerating the construction of the central government area in the new capital city (IKN) Nusantara.

The central government area covers an area of 6,671 hectares.

“We will inaugurate it on August 17, 2024,” the ministry’s Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination, Rachmat Kaimuddin, stated here on Wednesday.

He made the statement at the Eight Years of National Strategic Projects Infrastructure Forum and Edutainment event.

Kaimuddin explained that the IKN Task Force continues to coordinate with ministries or institutions to accelerate the development of IKN.

He explained that it encompasses coordinating on the matter of land in the new capital area with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning.

“Of course, the infrastructure that is being constructed on the land must be built by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing,” he explained.

Moreover, Kaimuddin said, the construction of transportation infrastructure should involve the Ministry of Transportation.

“Including in constructing (infrastructures for) telecommunications, electricity, and others, it must involve the relevant institutions,” he remarked.

He further explained that IKN development is not solely a need of the community but also of the government to equalize the development of new sectors outside Java Island.

He affirmed that the government has a strong commitment to relocate Indonesia’s capital city from Java Island to Kalimantan Island.

This step is taken not only to create a green economy area but also aims to create opportunities for developing stronger laws and regulatory frameworks to attract investors.

The government expressed hope that the IKN area would become a new magnet that attracts domestic and international investors as well as drives significant economic growth.
