"We will not allow fossil-fuel vehicles in IKN (Nusantara). We will use all environmentally friendly vehicles," the head of OIKN, Bambang Susantono, affirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to him, environmentally friendly vehicles refer to electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered vehicles, or other vehicles that can reduce emissions and lower air pollution.
Based on Presidential Regulation Number 63 of 2022 concerning details of the Capital City Master Plan, IKN will be developed as a forest city that implements nature-based solutions.
The development of IKN Nusantara is expected to take place keeping environmental preservation in mind, while optimizing science and technology. The new national capital is also projected to be a liveable city that provides several economic, social, and environmental benefits.
The development of IKN as a forest city will be in line with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060. To support the goal, the regulation states that IKN Nusantara will adopt a concept where travel and travel experiences will be increased using a variety of transportation modes that can serve as more sustainable alternative solutions.
The concept will support innovation to improve travel experiences through mobility as a service (MaaS), dynamic route finding, and future mobility modes, including electric vehicles (EVs), as well as connected autonomous vehicles (CAV) for public transportation, as per the regulation.
As part of the concept, unmanned vehicles and transportation will be allowed to enter and operate in IKN urban areas in stages by 2045.
The use of electric vehicles and the development of supporting infrastructure are also part of the renewable energy development strategy for IKN Nusantara to meet the net zero target.
