"One of the concrete results of the AIS Forum-backed collaborative research projects is MonMang App," Bakar noted on the sidelines of the AIS Forum's high-level meeting in the Indonesian island of Bali on Monday.
In addition to the MonMang App, a user-friendly platform to monitor mangrove forests, the AIS Forum-backed research works had also produced an innovation for seaweed's social cost of carbon (SCC) conversion, she stated.
Regarding mangrove rehabilitation and conservation, Indonesia had established a World Mangrove Center with which it is able to share its experience in fostering mangrove rehabilitation and conservation.
Through the center, Indonesia is also able to expand research and information networks and promote collaborations with stakeholders involved in making global policies for saving mangrove forests.
According to Bakar, the AIS Forum has also jointly funded the development of Advanced Drifter GPS Oceanography (ARHEA) by a scholar from Padjadjaran University (Unpad).
The ARHEA device is used for monitoring and analyzing water quality at sea and transmitting data from outer areas to related stakeholders to enable them to produce data-based policies, she remarked.
As published on its official website, the AIS Forum is described as "a platform designed to include island states and archipelagic countries regardless of their region, size, and development level."
A total of 51 archipelagic and island nations join the forum to address "challenges of ocean resource usage for sustainable economic growth, climate change resiliency, ocean pollution, emergency management, and the enhancement of sustainable fisheries."
The AIS Forum members include Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belize, Cabo Verde, Cook Islands, Comoro Islands, Cuba, Cyprus, Dominica, Dominica Republic, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Grenada, Guinea Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Iceland, and Indonesia.
Other members are Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Kiribati, Madagascar, Maldives, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Nauru, Niue, New Zealand, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, the United Kingdom, and Vanuatu.
