"There are already several Industrial Plantation Forest (HTI) business permit holders allocated for energy, both for forests outside Java and Perhutani areas in Java," Expert Staff of KLHK for Energy, Haruni Krisnawati, noted at a seminar on energy transition with land conservation that was monitored in Jakarta, Tuesday.
During the 2020-2024 period, the target area for businesses to utilize production forests for bioenergy is 15 thousand hectares.
The KLHK noted that there are 31 units of Industrial Plantation Forest Timber Product Management Business Permits (IUPHHK-HTI) and Perum Perhutani that have supported the development of energy plantation forests.
A total of 13 IUPHHK-HTI have allocated areas for energy reaching 142,172 hectares, with a realization of 1,500 hectares.
Moreover, 18 IUPHHK-HTI have committed to energy. Perum Perhutani allocated 67 thousand hectares of land for energy, with the actual planting figure reaching 31,135 hectares in 2021.
Indonesia is striving to accelerate energy transition from coal to new and renewable energy through steps, including by using wood-based biomass energy as a substitute for fossil energy.
Biomass energy that uses wood as a substitute for coal is considered more environmentally friendly, as it emits fewer emissions than coal.
The KLHK supports biomass utilization programs by promoting plantation forests for energy development and optimizing wood waste from forests and the timber industry.
