In the future, decarbonization will be implemented to reduce energy consumption and reduce the amount of rubbish and waste generated from tourism activities.Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesia has established cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Climate Promise Project to develop a blueprint or road map for tourism decarbonization, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, said.
"We encourage stakeholders to develop action plans and road map to promote climate-positive tourism. Our future tourism must be able to present climate-positive tourism," he added at a press conference on the "Road Map for the Indonesian Tourism Sector Towards Decarbonization" in Badung, Bali, on Tuesday.
According to the minister, the tourism decarbonization road map will cover three sub-sectors, namely tourism attractions, particularly destinations; accommodation or tourism facilities; and tours and travel.
The initial initiative will focus on aspects of energy consumed and waste generated from tourism activities, Uno added.
"In the future, decarbonization will be implemented to reduce energy consumption and reduce the amount of rubbish and waste generated from tourism activities," he informed.
His ministry will also follow up on the road map based on calculations of emission reduction targets from the tourism sector and prepare a reporting system in line with efforts toward achieving zero emissions by 2060 or sooner.
Moreover, the ministry is collaborating with the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources under the Climate Promise Project to conduct waste processing surveys at a number of hotels, which will be followed by mitigation actions to reduce carbon emissions, Uno informed.
"Similar actions will be expanded to five other super-priority tourism destinations in Indonesia," he added.
The plan for the decarbonization road map for the tourism sector was conveyed at the "Indonesia Policy Showcase" during the "AIS: Blue Economy High-Level Dialogue: Forging a New Era of Sustainable Growth" on Monday (October 9), and was signed at the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of the AIS (Archipelagic and Island States) Forum on Tuesday.
