"We found that there is an account in Bandung that illegally sells used clothing. We ask Instagram to take down the account because it will keep selling illegal goods," he said here on Wednesday.
He emphasized that Instagram must commit to preventing the trade of illegal goods because it is responsible for the content displayed on the platform.
"We want them to have that commitment and the world's development of platform regulation has been so; the platform must be responsible for its content," he said.
He noted that the European Union has the Digital Service Act that prohibits illegal content and trade on social media platforms.
Although Indonesia does not have a similar regulation yet, his ministry has asked Instagram to commit to maintaining ethical practices in the digital space.
"They (Instagram) want to do business here, meanwhile, this (trade in imported used clothes) will also disrupt the Indonesian economy because the sale of illegal goods besides being prohibited, is (a) criminal (offense)," he said.
Masduki informed that his ministry is cooperating with the Trade Ministry, Customs and Excise, and law enforcement officials to prevent the entry of illegal goods, including thrifted clothes into Indonesia.
As per Trade Ministerial Regulation No. 40 of 2022 concerning Goods Prohibited from Exports and Goods Prohibited from Imports, second-hand clothing is banned from being imported into the country.
The government has said that it has banned the import of used clothing to protect domestic textile, apparel, and footwear industries and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
