Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics Nezar Patria made the statement while leading the country's delegation at the 2023 AI Safety Summit (AISS) in London, the United Kingdom.
"(Indonesia supports cooperation), especially South-South cooperation, in the hopes of realizing a more inclusive and beneficial AI development," he noted in a written statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
At the 2023 AISS, the deputy minister echoed Indonesia's view on the importance of fostering a sense of togetherness among parties of the global community in the efforts to further develop the advanced technology.
He underscored the importance of reflecting the spirit of inclusiveness and participation in the process of formulating communiques concerning the safety aspects of the utilization of AI technology, which has seen rapid development in recent years.
"Indonesia proposes a more inclusive and open discussion on the formulation of communiques by inviting all countries," he affirmed.
Patria then outlined Indonesia's recommendations for the global community and related stakeholders in developing AI.
First, Indonesia underlines the need to take affirmative actions to develop AI in developing countries by facilitating more inclusive global cooperation, urging global companies to collaborate with local industry players, narrowing the digital divide, and facilitating the transfer of AI technology.
Pertaining to the second recommendation, Indonesia advocates the involvement of more countries at the AISS in the hopes of discussing issues related to the security and safety of AI in a more comprehensive manner.
In view of this, Patria expressed belief that more countries would participate in the AISS if the event were to be designated as a global platform akin to the meetings of the United Nations and G20.
As for the third recommendation, Indonesia attaches importance to the need to acknowledge and respect differences among countries in their role, capacity, and outlook related to the development and utilization of AI.
"In this, every country will be able to develop the utilization and management of AI based on their respective capacity. They will also have the opportunity to participate in discussion and cooperation at the global level," Patria concluded.
