Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Foreign Ministry informed that Abdillah Onim, his wife, and three kids had been evacuated from the besieged Gaza Strip and were scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Monday (November 6, 2023) afternoon.

The ministry and the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo helped arrange Onim and his family's return to Indonesia, the ministry's director for the protection of citizens and legal entities overseas, Judha Nugraha, said.

Onim and his three kids hold Indonesian citizenship, while his wife is a Palestinian citizen, Nugraha informed, adding that they left Gaza and crossed Egypt's Rafah border crossing on November 3.

The Onim family thereafter boarded an Emirates flight from Egypt to Jakarta, and they were scheduled to arrive at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten province, on Monday afternoon, he said.

ANTARA has earlier reported that Onim is an Indonesian humanitarian activist and a famous YouTuber who has been assisting the people of Palestine in the Gaza Strip for many years.

According to Egypt's regulation, foreign nationals evacuated from Gaza are only allowed to stay in the country for 3 x 24 hours before being repatriated to their home countries or moved to other countries.

Rafah crossing is the southernmost border checkpoint, which has become the sole passage for aid trucks headed to Gaza or foreign nationals evacuated from the overcrowded enclave.

Fresh armed conflict erupted between Palestine and Israel following a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel early in the morning of October 7.

Prior to the assault by Palestinian liberation fighters, Israel had continued its closure of Gaza crossings.

Palestine's news agency WAFA reported on September 25 that the Israeli closure of Gaza crossings had worsened the living conditions of Palestinians in Gaza.

According to WAFA, the Palestinians had already suffered from the severe impacts of "more than 17 years of tight Israeli land, sea, and air blockades."

Al Jazeera quoted Hamas, which governs Gaza, as stating that its assault on Israel was "a response to the desecration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence."

In response to the unprecedented surprise attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war on Hamas and, according to Al Jazeera, pledged that Israeli forces would "turn all Hamas hideouts into rubble."

The ongoing Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which is home to more than two million people, has resulted in the deaths of several thousand Palestinian civilians and triggered a humanitarian crisis.
