"Indonesia deeply regrets another failure by the UN Security Council (UNSC) to adopt a resolution on the full UN membership of the State of Palestine due to a veto cast by one of its permanent members," the ministry said via social media on Friday.
Indonesia reiterated its full support for Palestine's UN membership, which would give the country a deserved seat among nations and equal standing in the peace process toward the realization of the two-state solution, the ministry added.
The ministry informed that Palestine's path to full membership of the UN has stalled ever since it obtained observer status in 2012 despite overwhelming support from the majority of UN member states.
The 15-member UN Security Council failed to pass a resolution on Palestine's full membership proposed by Algeria due to the US veto on Thursday (April 18, 2024).
The veto effectively blocked Palestine from obtaining the status despite 12 UNSC members voting in favor of it. The United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained from the vote.
To pass, a UNSC resolution requires at least nine affirmative votes with no permanent member -- the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, or China -- casting a veto.
Palestine's efforts to secure a full UN membership gained traction in the wake of Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, which has claimed more than 30 thousand Palestinian lives so far.
The Palestinian Presidency condemned the US veto as unfair, unethical, unjustifiable, and defying the will of the international community, which strongly supports Palestine's full UN membership.
It reiterated that the veto fosters Israel's ongoing campaign of aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and occupied East Jerusalem.
The US veto also exposes the contradictions in its foreign policy, which claims to support a two-state solution, while repeatedly obstructing it by blocking resolutions in the UNSC on Palestine and its legitimate rights, according to the Palestinian leadership.
