Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Development Planning Ministry (Bappenas) emphasized the need to accelerate the development of community farming ponds, such as shrimp ponds, to achieve the 2020-2024 National Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) targets.

"In relation to the end of RPJMN, which is only one year away, we need to speed up to achieve the targets," Bappenas' Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources Vivi Yulaswati stated at the 2023 National Seminar & Shrimp Action Forum that was monitored online here on Thursday.

She explained that in the RPJMN 2020-2024, shrimp exports are targeted to grow at least eight percent per year through the revitalization of ponds in shrimp production centers.

The revitalization of shrimp ponds is listed in the RPJMN's strategic priority projects and involves the role of ministries and agencies and local governments.

Yulaswati said her side always monitors the achievement of these strategic priority projects.

Bappenas is also committed to continuing the synergy of planning and implementation, so that concrete and measurable progress can be achieved, she remarked.

Meanwhile, she said, traditional shrimp ponds contribute highly to the national shrimp production. In detail, 82.5 percent of shrimp ponds in the country, or 247 thousand hectares, are traditional or owned by local people.

She stressed that shrimp commodities are among the main contributors to the nation's fisheries economy, contributing 34 percent to the total export of fisheries.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's market share of shrimp exports at the global level only reached 7.9 percent in 2021, she pointed out.

"Of course, we see this trend increase every year," she stated.

Yulaswati is upbeat that the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, and other relevant agencies would continue to strengthen the development of local shrimp ponds, so as to drive significant contribution.
