"The Biak district government has issued an emergency decree. So, on that basis, BNPB will provide assistance, both in terms of budget, equipment, and logistics needed,"
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has prepared disaster mitigation measures to support the 2023 Sail Teluk Cenderawasih (STC) event, which will be held in Biak Numfor, Papua, in late November.

In a written statement received here on Thursday, BNPB chief Suharyanto informed that the agency will be involved in the security measures both before and during the event.

"According to our duties, disaster mitigation are included in the event security. We hope disasters will not occur during the event," he said.

He recalled that an earthquake that triggered a tsunami was recorded in Cenderawasih Bay in 1996.

"Biak and its surroundings had a bad experience; we still remember that in 1996, there was an earthquake with an 8.2 magnitude, and the victims were many. Although this was in the past, we agree that this disaster is a recurring occurrence," he said.

To support the implementation of STC 2023, BNPB has increased its capacity and mitigation steps to face potential disasters and protect the community and the organizers.

"We have carried out several steps, including disaster risk assessments in Biak district and its surroundings. In addition, we will carry out rehearsals, a disaster evacuation simulation, and other preparedness," he informed.

After the simulation, his side will build a post to anticipate the risks of natural disasters in the major event.

With the emergency status decree issued by the local government, Suharyanto emphasized that BNPB is ready to deploy disaster alertness tools to support the activity.

"The Biak district government has issued an emergency decree. So, on that basis, BNPB will provide assistance, both in terms of budget, equipment, and logistics needed," he said.

He added that BNPB and other related agencies will also monitor the weather conditions and carry out weather modification technology, if necessary.
