Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chief of Jakarta Metropolitan Police Brigadier General Suyudi Ario Seto has asked residents to strengthen the neighborhood security system (siskamling) to filter information ahead of the 2024 General Elections.

"I hope the siskamling officers can be information filters in this political year," he said in a written statement received here on Sunday.

Seto said that the situation of public security and order in Jakarta is very dynamic in this political year, as groups of sympathizers of different political preferences try to defend their own arguments.

"We can understand that, as there are several groups that compete against each other and defend their own arguments. The most important thing is community resilience. How people are able to receive some information," he explained.

Therefore, he asked the siskamling officers to become credible agents in filtering information in the current digital era.

"The principle is how do we choose the news that is in our grasp? Thank God, the Jakarta area is still safe and the Indonesian Military and National Police (TNI-Polri) are at the forefront in securing the situation," he said.

He also asked sub-district police to reduce the thriving cases of student brawls in the city.

"Even so, this is better than the situation in the 90s which was very massive," he said.

He hoped that the local police personnel would involve student councils in schools to minimize the potential for brawls.

"We hope the student councils can be more involved (to supervise) graduated seniors who still hang out near the schools," he said.

Meanwhile, South Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Ade Ary urged the public to contact his number at 0811-9981-998 and call center 110 if there are public security and order disturbances.
