Fossil-based energy is still dominant in Indonesia, meaning we are still generating a large amount of emissionsJakarta (ANTARA) - State-run oil and gas giant PT Pertamina forged cooperation in the development of carbon capture storage (CCS) and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies with US-based energy firm Chevron.
In a written statement received here on Tuesday, President Director of Pertamina Nicke Widyawati stated that her company is fully committed to developing low carbon businesses through CCS/CCUS project.
The application of CCS and CCUS technologies serves as one of Pertamina's efforts to expedite decarbonization toward clean energy transition, she noted.
"CCS/CCUS project is very strategic, as Indonesia wields enormous carbon storage potential. Indonesia can be a center for CCS in Southeast Asia," she stated.
According to Widyawati, efforts to optimize carbon are in line with the vision of net-zero emissions (NZE) 2060.
"Fossil-based energy is still dominant in Indonesia, meaning we are still generating a large amount of emissions. Hence, it is necessary to pay serious attention to CCS/CCUS technologies," she stated.
To that end, Widyawati remarked that Pertamina and Chevron agreed to conduct a joint study and exchange information related to the development of CCS/CCUS technologies, including geological and geophysical data, maps, models and interpretations, notes, summaries, and commercial information.
Chevron signed three confidentiality agreements on CCS/CCUS with three upstream sector subsidiaries of Pertamina, namely PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga-Sanga, and PT Pertamina Hulu East Kalimantan.
The agreements constitute follow-ups to the joint study agreement established by Pertamina and Chevron on March 6, 2023. Moreover, both parties have been collaborating and exploring cooperation opportunities since 2022.
The signing of the agreements was carried out by the companies' representatives as well as an official from Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Washington D.C., the United States, on Monday (November 13).
President Director Widyawati; Deputy for Maritime and Energy Sovereignty Coordination at the Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordinating Ministry, Jodi Mahardi; and Country Manager of Chevron Indonesia, Wahyu Budiarto witnessed the signing process.
Currently, Pertamina is collaborating with Chevron in developing the CCS Hub in East Kalimantan that integrates emission-generating industrial areas in Balikpapan and Bontang.
