"Measured fishing will lead to better governance," he remarked here on Monday.
The measured fishing policy is stipulated in Government Regulation (PP) No. 11 of 2023. However, the policy still requires a technical explanation of the implementation in the form of a ministerial regulation.
The minister cautioned that if the government was unable to control or regulate the management of natural resources, it is feared that marine products, especially fisheries, will be depleted over time.
"If it is not done this way, then what will we inherit for the next generation?" he questioned.
Regarding those who opposed the fishing policy, Minister Trenggono affirmed that the policy is the way in which the government ensures the welfare of the community, especially fishermen, and the sustainability of natural resources.
He remarked that through the policy, the government provides broader rights to improve the welfare of fishermen.
He noted that PP No. 11 of 2023 changes the policies and regulations of fishing that had been in effect for decades since the 1980s.
Some significant changes in the new policy include the shift from input control to output control in fishing.
Earlier, the KKP Ministry's Acting Director General of Capture Fisheries, Agus Suherman, remarked that digital transformation has a key role in implementing quota-based measured fishing.
To support measured fishing through digital means, the ministry presents the E-PIT application to facilitate the licensing process and data collection of captured fish.
Suherman stated that the E-PIT app integrates all apps for the services of captured fisheries into one system.
