Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation advised the public to avoid traffic congestion during the peak of the homecoming and return flow of the Christmas and New Year holidays by preparing their trip better.

"We urge the public to plan for their trips well and avoid the peak of homecoming and return flows," Transportation Ministry's spokesperson, Adita Irawati, told ANTARA here on Thursday.

Irawati said the ministry projected the peak of the exodus flow during the year-end holiday to occur twice, namely, on Friday, December 22, 2023, and then a week thereafter, on December 29, 2023.

Meanwhile, the ministry stated that the return flow will occur on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, and on Monday, January 1, 2024.

Irawati affirmed that her side and other parties will focus on crucial points during the travel flow, such as the Trans Java Line.

"For this reason, everything must be prepared properly, such as traffic management both on toll and non-toll roads, controlling markets that spill onto the roads, optimizing rest areas on toll roads and truck scales, and so on," she pointed out.

To avoid overcrowding during the traveling period, people are urged to take public transportation or join the free homecoming programs offered by the government, she stated.

The ministry's spokesperson also advised travelers to not use motorcycles for long-distance trips. However, if they have no choice, she urged motorcyclists to prioritize safety while driving.

She also called on travelers to not stay in the fully occupied rest areas and not stop on the sides of the road.

She said people can exit the toll road in the nearest city and rest in places that have been prepared.
