Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) said on Thursday that three of its volunteers at the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza are awaiting evacuation from the besieged enclave to Egypt.

"They have been evacuated from the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza to Rafah in southern Gaza," according to a statement posted by MER-C on its official Instagram account @mercindonesia.

MER-C Presidium chairperson Sarbini Abdul Murad told ANTARA that the volunteers — Fikri Rofiul Haq, Reza Aldilla Kurniawan, and Farid Zanzabil Al Ayubi — will be evacuated from Rafah in southern Gaza to Egypt.

However, Murad said that he has yet to confirm whether or not they would later be repatriated to Indonesia after they arrive in Egypt.

Efforts are being made to evacuate the three Indonesian humanitarian workers following Israel's deadly attack on the Indonesian Hospital, he added.

The recent Israeli assault on the hospital resulted in the death of 12 civilians and left several others injured.

In the period since the Israeli government declared war in Gaza following Hamas' surprise attack on October 7, 2023, Israeli occupation forces have continued their military campaign in the besieged enclave.

On Wednesday (November 22), Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, and Israel agreed to a four-day truce.

ANTARA reported earlier that the Indonesian government has welcomed the truce, which will pave the way for a four-day humanitarian pause in the besieged Gaza Strip.

According to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Indonesia has been consistently stressing the importance of ending the armed conflict and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The latest Qatar-mediated truce, which is reportedly set to come into effect on Thursday morning, will hopefully pave the way for a permanent end to the conflict and be a start of efforts to bring all related parties together to seek just and comprehensive peace, Marsudi said in a statement posted on social media platform X on Wednesday.

Fresh armed conflict erupted between Palestine and Israel following a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel in early October.

Prior to the assault by Palestinian liberation fighters, Israel had continued its closure of Gaza crossings.

Palestine's news agency WAFA reported on September 25 that the Israeli closure of Gaza crossings had worsened the living conditions of Palestinians in Gaza.

According to WAFA, Palestinians had already suffered from the severe impacts of "more than 17 years of tight Israeli land, sea, and air blockades."

Al Jazeera quoted Hamas as saying that its assault on Israel was in "response to the desecration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence."

In response to the Hamas attack that reportedly killed 1,200 Israelis, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war on Hamas. According to Al Jazeera, he pledged that Israeli forces would "turn all Hamas hideouts into rubble."

The Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which is home to more than 2 million people, has resulted in the deaths of more than 14 thousand Palestinian civilians and triggered a humanitarian crisis.
