Giving recognition to people with disabilities is an inseparable part of national and state life.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Lestari Moerdijat, on Wednesday underscored the need for the immediate implementation of strategic steps to create a disability-friendly environment in Indonesia.

"Creating a disability-friendly environment aligns with the state's commitment, which has been ratified in the convention on the rights of people with disabilities and also ratified by Law Number 19 of 2011," she said at an online discussion themed "Realizing a Disability-Friendly State."

Moerdijat added that creating a supportive environment for workers with disabilities is a joint responsibility, and not a task for the government alone.

"Giving recognition to people with disabilities is an inseparable part of national and state life," she said.

Consistent implementation of policies, she continued, is important for realizing equality and providing equal recognition to people with disabilities.

Deputy for population and employment at the Ministry of National Development Planning, Maliki, informed that all ministries and institutions have issued implementing regulations for Law Number 8 of 2016 on People with Disabilities as guidelines for cross-sectoral disability-inclusive development.

"The only thing that may not yet be (realized) is about concessions, which, hopefully, the Finance Ministry will be able to complete," he said.

He further said that all sectors, such as social welfare for people with disabilities, employment, and infrastructure planning to accommodate people with disabilities in public services, have reached an adequate level of preparation.

"All sectors have been ready. What is left is the implementation, which we must continue to oversee," he added.

According to data from the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, in 2022, the number of people with disabilities in Indonesia reached 22.9 million, accounting for around 8.5 percent of the nation's total population of around 280 million.
