I hope that Indonesia and the UAE can exchange experiences and experts in the fields of climatology and geophysics
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on meteorology and geophysics cooperation with the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati and NCM director general Abdulla Al Mandous signed the agreement at the NCM Abu Dhabi office on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the Indonesian embassy in Abu Dhabi.

The two parties will collaborate in areas such as early warning systems, weather modification, human resource development, consultations for commercial services related to meteorology and geophysics, and other agreed-upon collaborations, it said.

Karnawati said that given Indonesia's location in the Ring of Fire, which exposes it to hazards like fires and tsunamis, there is a pressing need for the agency to strengthen its early warning system. Additionally, Indonesia's diverse natural conditions across different regions pose socioeconomic challenges.

As part of BMKG's strategy to strengthen its role, the agency is collaborating with various partners, such as NCM, to share experiences, develop human resources, and engage in diverse meteorological and geophysical projects, she informed.

The Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, Husin Bagis, said that the agreement marks a significant step forward in cooperation between Indonesia and the UAE in the fields of climatology and geophysics.

"I hope that Indonesia and the UAE can exchange experiences and experts in the fields of climatology and geophysics," Bagis added.

Discussions on the agreement began in August 2023 and were finalized in November, ahead of the COP28 conference, which President Joko Widodo is expected to attend, the statement said.
