Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) departed Jakarta for Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to participate in the Conference of the Parties 28 (COP28) climate change high-level event.
The president, along with a limited delegation, took off from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, on Thursday, at 9 a.m. local time.
"The world is highly expecting the COP28 to endorse concrete global actions to suppress the rise in temperature on the planet. Developed countries, in particular, should strengthen their commitments to funding efforts aimed at reaching the net-zero emissions target," the president remarked.
President Jokowi made the statement ahead of his departure for Dubai at the Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase.
At the conference, the head of state will share Indonesia's experience in dealing with the impacts of climate change and emphasize the importance of global collaboration to ensure sufficient funds for handling the global phenomenon.
"It is also necessary to realize inclusive transition for the sake of ensuring the sustainability of development and welfare of people in developing countries," he stated.
Jokowi will also make the most of his visit to Dubai to attend a presidency event related to food system transformation, G77 and China Summit, and several bilateral meetings.
The president and his entourage are scheduled to return to Indonesia on Sunday (December 3).
Earlier, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar had stated that the Indonesian government is planning to outline the progress it had achieved in dealing with climate change and the efforts made to lower greenhouse gas emissions at the COP28 scheduled from November 30 to December 12.
The minister remarked that all countries are expected to succeed in reducing carbon emissions by 43 percent by 2030, 50 percent by 2030, and 100 percent by 2050.
"In this context, Indonesia has committed to reducing its carbon emissions, as it has issued an NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) document that targets 43.2 percent of reduction (with international support)," she remarked in Dubai on Wednesday (November 29).
Bakar further noted that the government was planning to issue a second NDC with a higher target next year.
The minister stated that in order to achieve a higher target in the planned second NDC, the government would optimize mangroves and ramp up efforts to restore, conserve, and protect seagrass beds to absorb greenhouse gases while improving waste management.
Meanwhile, Head of the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) Bambang Susantono had stated on November 24 that the authority plans to launch the Nusantara Regionally and Locally Determined Contribution (RLDC) document at the COP28.
"I believe this (launch of the document) will be a historical feat not only for the new capital city Nusantara but also for Indonesia as a whole," he remarked.
Susantono expressed belief that the Nusantara RLDC document would guide parties in Indonesia to take collaborative actions to respond to climate change and resolve likely problems.
He further explained that the Nusantara RLDC document is a living document, thereby translating to the fact that it will continue to adjust to technological developments and new approaches.
Susantono noted that the Nusantara RLDC document will contain a road map that will help Indonesia's future capital city to achieve several targets related to climate change, such as the one pertaining to Nusantara's vision of becoming a city that produces zero emissions by 2045.
He added that the authority envisions Nusantara as an exemplary city for other cities around the world in resolving issues and challenges related to climate change.
