Jakarta (ANTARA) - Floodwaters ranging from 40 to 70 centimeters in height that inundated the Pondok Karya road section in Pela Mampang neighborhood, South Jakarta, on Thursday (January 4) evening, forced rescuers to evacuate several residents.

The flood victims were evacuated by a joint team of search and rescue (SAR) workers by using inflatable rescue boats. Among them were elderly people and children, according to the Jakarta SAR Agency.

Rescuers were sighted attempting to evacuate the flood victims in the Pela Mampang neighborhood of Mampang Prapatan Sub-district, South Jakarta, to safer places at 8:30 p.m. local time.

In the Pela Mampang neighborhood area, floodwaters, triggered by downpour on Thursday evening, inundated at least 11 community units, the SAR agency stated.

"We continue our rescue mission to ensure that all affected residents are safe," Jakarta SAR Agency Head Fazli said.

The National SAR Agency (Basarnas) continues to coordinate with the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and several other parties to carry out evacuation efforts in other flood-hit areas, he added.

According to the BPBD-Jakarta Office, floodwaters, reaching a height of 120 centimeters, inundated eight community units in the Kuningan Barat neighborhood area, South Jakarta.

In addition to heavy rains pelting the area, the floodwaters were also triggered by the overflowing of the Mampang and Krukut rivers, the BPBD stated, adding that the floodwaters inundated at least 24 of the 30,772 community units in the metropolitan city.
