Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - During a working visit to Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, on Saturday, chief of the National Police (Polri), Listyo Sigit Prabowo, invited all elements of the community to help realize peaceful general elections this year.

Prabowo noted that the election risk index issued by the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) is a reference for Polri to declare peaceful elections on every occasion and at any time in areas with high risk levels.

The declaration of peaceful elections in 2024 has been carried out by organizers, the community, community leaders, and political parties.

"We have carried out this campaign simultaneously in several areas," he said.

The police chief stated that the goal of the declaration is that despite the differences in political parties and choices, the situation will remain overall peaceful. In recent days, sentiments have started to heat up, including on social media.

"Our hope is that the community will not be affected by this. We believe that the community is already mature in making their choice in the voting booth," he said.

He added that differences of opinion are normal. This is a part of democracy.

"If we can maintain peace, our hope is that democracy will run well," he explained.

Indonesia will hold the general elections on February 14, 2024, with the participation of around 204.8 million voters.

During the elections, Indonesians will elect a president and vice president as well as members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the province, city, and district levels.

Three pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates are contesting the elections — Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.
