The total number of long-distance and local train trips managed by KAI stood at 6,522 train trips, or an average of 362 train trips per day.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - During the Christmas and New Year holiday period from December 21, 2023, to January 7, 2024, the number of train passengers climbed to 3,505,787, or up 27 percent from 2,751,598 in the year-ago-period, PT KAI reported.

President director of the state-owned railway company, Didiek Hartantyo, said here on Monday that the increase was due to the rise in the number of train trips during the holiday period.

"The total number of long-distance and local train trips managed by KAI stood at 6,522 train trips, or an average of 362 train trips per day," he informed.

The number of trips showed an increase of 21 percent compared to the year-ago period, when it was recorded at 5,379, with an average of 299 trips per day.

According to Hartantyo, the on-time performance of trains during the period also recorded a positive achievement, namely 99.3 percent for train departures and 98.2 percent for train arrivals.

The number of holiday passengers peaked on December 23, 2023, at 233,554.

KAI reported that the busiest stations during the Christmas-New Year period were Pasar Senen, Gambir, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surabaya Pasarturi, and Surabaya Gubeng stations.

Besides domestic passengers, KAI recorded 22,162 foreign passengers during the holiday period.

The favorite trains among foreign nationals during that period were the Argo Parahyangan train plying the Gambir - Bandung route; the Sancaka train on the Yogyakarta - Surabaya Gubeng route; and the Taksaka train running the Gambir - Yogyakarta route.

The foreign passengers included those from the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and China.

He also noted that there was a train accident in Cicalengka, Bandung district, West Java, some time ago. According to him, the accident will need to be evaluated to improve the safety and security of train trips in the future.

"We hope that the results of this evaluation can become a very important learning strategy for KAI to prepare for train operations throughout 2024, especially ahead of the 2024 Eid al-Fitr transportation, which we will soon implement," he said.
